<p>CascadeAnderson Geller’s conjunctivitis Formula for viral or bacterial Use powdered herb<br />
Berberis V 2 parts, Hydrastis 1 part, Hamamelis 1 part, Whole Fennel seed 1 part.  In a separate bag 1-oz whole calendula flowers<br />
Take 4 TBS/Quart, decoct 10 minutes, and remove from heat.  Infuse 1 TBS calendula flowers for 10 minutes.  Double strain, then filter with a coffee filter.  Store in a sterile jar.  Keeps in the refrigerator for 3 days.  Sig:  Instill 5 gtt, or Wipe eyes with a sterile cotton ball, every 2 hours until improved, then QID.<br />
NCNM Eye drops:  (available by prescription at Lloyd Pharmacy) for viral or bacterial conjunctivitis.<br />
Start with dry herb, 3 parts hydrastis, 1-part fennel seeds (ground in mortice &amp; pestle), 1 part euphrasia, 1 part berberis<br />
Decoct 1 tsp. Of the above with 80 ml water for 3 minutes, remove from heat and infuse for 10 more minutes.  Strain; add 10 gtt of specific extract of Echinacea.  Strain mixture (using a microporous filter), qsad to 180 ml with sterile saline in a sterile container.</p>
<p>For infants with mild cases of viral conjunctivitis associated with URI suggest breast milk in the eyes.<br />
Antibiotics: Erythromycin ophthalmic ointment, Cochrane Review: antibiotics hastens clinical and microbiological remission of bacterial conjunctivitis  .<br />

<p>Chest rubs. Use 3 to 6 drops of essential oil (camphor, thyme, eucalyptus, rosemary) with 1 tbsp. food-grade oil (almond, flax, or olive).<br />
Castor oil pack. Apply oil directly to chest, cover with a clean soft cloth and plastic wrap. Place a heat source over the pack and let sit for 30 to 60 minutes. Use daily.<br />
Use a humidifier at night<br />
Alternating hot and cold applications to the chest or back. Alternate three minutes hot with one minute cold.<br />
Warming sock treatment. Before bed, place cold, damp socks on warmed feet and cover with dry wool socks overnight.</p>
<p>Homeopathy</p>
<p>Aconite &#8212; should be taken during the first 24 hours that symptoms appear, particularly if they develop following exposure to cold weather; this remedy is most appropriate for individuals with a hoarse, dry, cough who complain of dry mouth, thirst, restlessness, worsened symptoms from cold air and/or lying on the side, and being awakened from the cough<br />
Drosera &#8212; for dry, spasmodic cough with sharp chest pain and a tickling sensation in the throat that may cause the individual to gag, choke or vomit; this remedy is most appropriate for individuals who tend to be hoarse, become worse when lying down, and perspire during the night<br />
Hepar sulphuricum &#8212; for later stages of pertussis with wheezing, little mucus production, and coughing that comes on when any part of the body gets cold<br />
Ipecacuanha &#8212; spasmodic cough and gagging or vomiting; this remedy is commonly prescribed for infants<br />
Phosphorus &#8212; for several different types of cough, most particularly a dry, harsh cough described as a persistent tickle with sharp chest pain signified by the individual clutching his or her painful chest; this remedy is most appropriate for individuals who are often worn out and exhausted, have undue anxiety, even fear of death and require a lot of reassurance<br />

Salvia officinalis (sage) has been used as a treatment for pharyngitis and stomatitis for centuries.   It is typically used in aqueous infusion, alcohol-based tincture or volatile oil. Salvia is delivered as a gargle or mouthwash for these purposes.</p>
<p>The volatile oil of salvia contains alpha and beta thujones, cineole and camphor.  Other constituents include rosemarinic acid, flavonoids and tannins.   In vitro anti-viral effects have been documented.</p>

<p><strong>Throat Coat© </strong>tea can give symptomatic relief for pain.</p>
<p><strong>Physical Medicine and Hydrotherapy for Strep Throat</strong><br />
1.  <strong>Saline gargles 1/4 teaspoon of salt per 8-ounce glass of warm water.  </strong>May aid with hygiene of the pharynx and provide analgesia.  Saline gargles have not undergone clinical trials, but are frequently recommended in conventional and naturopathic practice guidelines.</p>
<p><strong>2.  Warming throat compress</strong><br />
This is a variation on the heating compress.  This treatment acts to reflexively increase the circulation and decrease congestion in the throat and head.  It has a sedating action and may help with sleep.  This treatment is also effective for analgesia.<br />
